5 Easy steps for a Super Snow party

Need easy snow story time or party ideas?

The following can be done in your own family, or virtually with family and friends this holiday season.

Having a birthday during covid restrictions? Drop off craft kits to your child's friends and send them a zoom link for a party time. Enjoy the activities together!

1. Start the story time with a rhyme or song to break the ice. Puppets are also great for warming up. (Read our blog post for more puppet ideas) Have your puppet tell some snow themed jokes.

What kind of treats does a snow man love?

Ice Krispies!

What do you call a snowman in August?

A puddle!

2. Read a couple of snowman themed books together.

Books Suggestions:

The most perfect snowman, by Chris Britt (use props such as mittens, a bunny puppet, scarf and a carrot to make the story come alive)

This was surprisingly fun in our virtual story time when we tried it this week.. The children wrapped up their siblings, then sent us photos after, it was a blast! ( some children like the competition of a timed contest, others just like the fun of a non pressured activity)

3. Game: Minute to win it snowman wrap

Materials:

- 1 roll of toilet paper per team

- 5 black circles from cardstock or construction paper

- 1 orange triangle "carrot nose"

- tape

How to play:

1. Each team chooses one player to be the "snowman".

2. The other members of the team wrap the toilet paper around them to make them become a snow person!

3. Finish off the look by adding the eyes, buttons and carrot nose. Be creative and add more to it if you would like, be silly and have fun! It is also fun for the child to "burst out" of the snow man bands.

4. Craft: if doing virtually, each child or family makes the craft and then posts photos of their creations!

Glow in the dark Snowman (Idea from veryspecialtales.com)

Materials:

- Empty plastic water bottle.

- Water to fill the bottle

- Glow sticks or glow in the dark glitter glue

- Pipe cleaner

- Permanent marker

- Small pieces of bendable wire

- Googly eyes

- Orange paper triangle

- Glue

Instructions:

1. Wrap the pipe cleaner around the middle of the bottle

2. Glue the googly eyes above the pipe cleaner

3. Glue on the triangle carrot nose

4. Draw on buttons with the marker

5. Bend the end of the wire into a circle and twist onto the pipe cleaner

6. Fill the bottle with water.

7. "Crack" the glow stick so it glows, or squeeze glow in the dark glitter glue into the water and stir. Replace the cap.

8. Turn out the lights and watch your snow man glow!

(Thanks to the Blackmore family for sharing these fun photos of our virtual story time!)

Other ideas:

  • Sing some fun snow songs - "Frosty the snowman" or "Once there was a snowman"

  • Have a "Freeze" dance competition- play fun music and then pause the music and freeze

  • "Skate" around on wax paper or paper plates

  • Indoor snowball fight with faux snowballs or just crumpled up pieces of paper, or go out and have a real snowball fight to get some fresh air

5. Finish up with a fun snowy snack.

Ingredients:

- 2 marshmallows

- 1 Hershey's kiss

- Mini chocolate chips

- 2 stick pretzels

- Red gel icing

Instructions:

  1. Take 2 marshmallows, stick together with frosting

  2. unwrap Hershey's kiss and place frosting on flat side

  3. stick the kiss to the top of the 2 marshmallows

  4. place 2 mini chocolate chips for eyes

  5. stick pretzels in both sides for arms

  6. use gel icing to draw on mouth and buttons

  7. eat and enjoy!

Whether in your own family, or virtually with friends, we hope you can relax and enjoy the magic of connection together!
