Everyone loves the magic of connecting with others. We love to connect with people that we love, and people that make up our community. Our new status as "travel librarians" has helped us think outside the box, make connections, and try new and creative ways to help literacy to continue to be a vibrant part of our community.
Travel to a local Alpaca Farm
This week we had the awesome opportunity to visit the alpaca farm of Sonja and Ed Richards. Our goal? To bring experiences to families virtually, and connect them to literacy. Savannah and I were fascinated to learn all about Alpacas, and how yarn is made from their fleece. We also loved petting the miniature donkeys, meeting their great Pyrenees herd dog, Samson, and seeing their Highland cows and adorable calves. I have lived on a farm for most of my life, but it was so fun to see some different animals and see Sonja spin fiber into yarn on her spinning wheel. At the end of each video we read a story that connects to the experience we had that day. Our vision is to bring literacy alive by providing real life experiences to help children make connections between what they see and experience and what they read. Check out the video here.

"Book a Librarian" virtual storytime.
The other great opportunity this week was to begin our "Book a Librarian" personal zoom story times. We were honored to be allowed into the homes of our young patrons virtually to share a fun story time with them.
Each family had chosen a theme for their story time. We then gathered a bundle of books and a craft kit for each family to pick up for curbside delivery, since our library is closed to the public. It was awesome to greet them with some jokes from puppets Sally and Bart the pirate, read stories, share rhymes and do a personal craft. We had great feedback and felt again, as always, the magic of connection through literacy. (Click here for a fun snow man story time idea. For more fun, zoom with another family or grandparents, then share photos of your activities and crafts with each other.)
