Deliciously Fun Storytime Secrets!

Chocolate chip cookies! Apple Pie! Oooooh, Hot Cocoa!!! Now that I have got your attention let's talk about some easy but amazing crafts and snacks that you can add to your storytime to make it even better!! Let's say you are reading the book "The Storm Whale" by Benji Davies and you want a snack to kinda go along with the fishing topic, it could be at easy as getting goldfish crackers, pretzels, and some cream cheese for that theme. They dip their pretzel into the cream cheese (peanut butter) and then "catch" their own fish!

A fun snack you could try is fruit kabob rockets! To go with the book "Rocket" by Mick, Inkpen, all you will need is grape, watermelon, and blueberries (this is just a suggestion on some fruit you could use), and some wooden skewers. Then once you have all of this you just put the fruit on and eat it! We also suggested having the kid put the fruit on. It's fun for them and helps them use their fine motor skills, and it is a two-for-one, a craft, and a snack in one experience!

Another snack you could make with your kids is "Ham and Cheese Christmas crackers snack"

All you need for this snack is cheese, ham, crackers, and cookie cutters. This is a fun snack because kids love using cookie cutters and BONUS they can eat the scraps - perfect easy cleanup! If they can't have cheese they could use the cookie cutter on meat or, a cucumber with the cracker!

When you think of doing a craft you probably are thinking "uuggghh it's going to make another mess that I will have to clean up!" But, that is not necessarily true there are so many crafts out there that are so much fun and are easy to clean up! Along with easy clean-up, another plus is, when your children are able to do crafts like cutting a shape out, sewing a piece of yarn into paper, or even coloring those all help build motor skills that they will need in their life.

A fun winter craft you could try is a "Cotton Ball Snowman"!

Supplies:

- Cotton balls

- Glue (white Glue or Glue Stick)

- Colorful Paper

- Google eyes

- Washable Markers

- 3 different size circle objects you can trace around

Instructions:

  1. Have the kid take the small circle object you collected and have them trace around it with a marker for the head of the snowman, then continue doing the same thing with the other circle objects for the rest of the body.

  2. After the circles have been drawn, take the glue and the cotton balls and start gluing them in the circles for the snowman. (Note: if using white glue it will take a little longer for it to dry so you might want to take a break between steps 2 and 3)

  3. Now take your colorful paper and make your snowman a hat, a heart, and some hands. Then glue them on.

  4. What we suggest to do next is for the snowflakes is to have the children draw them on and be creative on how they want the background to look.

That is all it takes! Not hard at all. One thing we all need to remember is that the perfect picture we have in our heads of how the craft is going to turn out is not how it is really going to look. The amazing thing about children is that they have such astounding imaginations! When we give them a craft idea we can let them run away with it and do their own thing! Don't worry it will still turn out great and it will look amazing! Don't forget to have your little artist sign their masterpiece!
